Carnivals are a wonderful in which people of all faiths, beliefs and backgrounds can come together. They are bright, vibrant and fun; reflecting the diverse people who create and star in them. From food to dancing, carnivals are often a melting pot of smells, tastes and sounds.

Here are our favorite stories that celebrate the wonderful carnivals of the world! We particularly love stories with authentic representation and tales that reflect the diverse world we live in.

To Carnival!: A Celebration in St Lucia by Baptiste Paul and Jana Glatt

Age Range: EYFS and KS1

A beautiful story of one girl’s journey to carnival. A book rich in texture, colour and imagery.


Julian Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love

Age range: EYFS and KS1

A book with few words; the story is told through intricately detailed illustrations. It follows the story of Julian, a boy who is awestruck by the sight of people dressed as mermaids on their way to a parade. The beauty of this story is in his Nana’s patience and understanding; helping Julian to create and celebrate his own dazzling mermaid costume!


The Big Book of Festivals by Joan-Maree Hargreaves, Marita Bullock, and Liz Rowland

Age range: KS1

A non-fiction book that introduces children to different celebrations and festivals around the world. Filled with colourful illustrations and interesting facts, it is a great classroom book.


Man-Man and the Tree of Memories by Yaba Badoe

Age range: KS2

A stunning book that jumps through time and space; entwining themes of slavery, myth, family and health. The story begins with Man Man, a young boy, who is excitedly practicing for the upcoming Carnival. His mother becomes unwell as the festivities draw nearer and Man Man finds himself whisked away by the Queen of Revels.
