Re-telling classic tales – engaging a new generation with modern twists
One of my favourite genres of books is a classic tale, re-told for a modern audience. There is something so special about seeing a childhood favourite re-imagined, looking at a different perspective or introducing a new story element.
They are fun for adults, who can immerse themselves in the nostalgia, and great for children who get to discover a wonderful new book. There are some GREAT examples of this, so we’ve picked out our favourites here…
Hansel and Gretel by Bethan Woolvin
Age range: EYFS and KS1
As fans of ‘Little Red’, the first in Bethan Woolvin’s Rebel Fairytale series, we were delighted to read this take on Hansel and Gretel. The story flips the characters around, creating two cheeky children who play havoc with the witch’s cottage. A fun and engaging read!
Gina Kaminski Saves the Giant by Craig Barr-Green and Francis Martin
Age Range: EYFS and KS1
Another sequel that we have been excited to read! Follow Gina once again on adventure as she re-writes an old tale. This empowered young girl is determined to fix the story and become her own hero.
Jo Bright and the Seven Bots by Deborah Underwood
Age range: EYFS and KS1
The science and comic fans in your class will love this STEM based twist on Snow White. With dragons and robots and fantastic heroine, what is not to love.
The Worst Princess by Anna Kemp
Age range: KS1
Princesses don’t need rescuing! That’s how Princess Sue feels; she is feisty and strong and wants to save herself. Kids will enjoy this quick-paced story filled with humour and adventure!
Jack and the Baked Beanstalk by Colin Stimpson
Age range: KS1 and KS2
Bringing an old story to a more recent time, this retelling is set in the 1950s where Jack and his family run a small cafe. When he accidentally buys baked beans instead of coffee beans, can Jack persuade the giant to put his cooking skills to good use and help the business?
Rumaysa: A Fairytale by Radiya Hafiza
Age range: KS2
An enchanting tale that weaves three stories into one! Join Rumaysa as she teams up with Cinderayla and Sleeping Sara in this wonderful chapter book for KS2.
