Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month
June is Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month (GRTHM, for short); an important celebration of the stories, rights and histories of travelling people. This group of communities has a rich history that spans 1000s of years, however many travelling people still face significant prejudice and stigmatisation.
Representation of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people in books is hard to find, particularly positive depictions. Historically, characters were shown as fortune tellers or thieves which has led to the spread of misinformation. It is so important that the stories we share about any culture or community gives an honest and positive look at it’s people and their lives.
This is important, not just because we want all children to see themselves in stories, but also so other children understand the different people in their communities. Having books that reflect the wonderfully diverse world we live in, is central to The Story Project’s aim.
We had hoped to share some books that represent positive images of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. However, there are very few on the market.
Luckily, Richard O’Neill, one of our favourite children’s authors, is passionate about this very topic. He has written many wonderful stories that champion the lives of travelling communities.
