The Story Project

Exploring Aspirations: Book-led Resources to Prepare for Transition and Beyond

For all the children who have big dreams, but don’t believe they can get there.

Looking for the perfect summer 2 project to do with your class as they prepare for next year? Our aspirations programme provides an opportunity to dig below the surface of aspirations, helping children understand their potential and get ready for the next step in life. Plus, it’s free to download!

The Aspirations Programme is a specially designed collection of lessons to support and inspire children’s understanding of aspirations, including the challenges to feeling aspirational, achieving goals and what success means.

Combining ‘Living Well Schools’ and The Story Project’s years of knowledge and experience in education, we have been inspired to create a series of resources tailored to the needs of children who find feeling aspirational a challenge.

Using the magic of stories, we give depth to the topic of aspirations. Because, having aspirations isn’t just about having a dream, it’s about knowing how to get it when it seems a million miles away.

What does the programme look like?

The programme is split into three key themes that underpin aspirations: resilience, equality and experience. Within each theme there are two books, each covering two objectives. These objectives form the basis of our engaging story-based lessons, which can be adapted for use in assemblies, classes or as small group interventions.

The programme is engineered so that it builds progressively across KS1 and kS2. This means you can use it across school. But don’t worry – if you want to just do one book you can! The units have been carefully created to stand alone too.

What can I expect in the lessons?

All lessons follow The Story Project’s unique research-backed S.T.O.R.Y. structure; linking with key RSE and literacy skills. The structure also ensures every single lesson includes opportunity for emotional regulation, emotional vocabulary training, discussion, critical thinking and reflection. Teachers find The Story Project lessons impactful, easy-to-implement and supportive.

Why are stories a good way to explore transition?

Reading is a naturally calming activity, which supports children’s wellbeing. Stories create a distance between important topics and the reader, resulting in space where children feel safe to discuss their opinions, worries and ideas. Using diverse characters further inspires children to see themselves as aspirational, and to develop empathy for those around them. Not to mention, stories are memorable and fun!
